Free ESG courses, and what practice adds

A certificate records a quiz. Performance is a method, a figure, and a sentence that does not go past either.

Core sample, olive, water, hard hat, work gloves, a gavel and a climate-risk screening sheet on one table
A core, an olive branch, a glass of water, a hard hat and gloves, a gavel on a closed book, and a climate-risk screening sheet. The measurable, the people, the decision, and the screen that should come before the claim.

What this selection keeps

Six points from the 8 October 2026 note. ESG is not a rating and not a certificate. A certificate of completion is not assurance. A week later, recall favours testing over rereading. One site and two invoices can be reported from 106.5 to 542.6 tonnes of CO2e. Three decided files, and Directive (EU) 2024/825, measure the gap between a sentence and the plan behind it. A protected supplier may refuse the extra lines of a questionnaire, and no certificate does that sorting. The checked catalogue and the six exercises stay in the PDF. This page is the short reading. The same chain is the last link.

1. What the three letters are

ESG organises non-financial information that investors, lenders, customers and regulators use when they judge whether an organisation can keep operating. It is not one standard, and it is not a rating. Environmental is the measurable part for an industrial or energy operator: fuel, fugitive emissions, water, land, waste, and the climate assumptions inside a twenty-year asset. Social is the people the organisation depends on and affects: safety, labour in the supply chain, consent, indigenous rights, and human-rights due diligence. A fatality, a strike or a blocked permit is a social fact with a cash consequence. Governance is who decides, who is paid, how conflicts are disclosed, and whether a number can be traced to a method.

The label entered mainstream finance with Who Cares Wins in 2004 and the Principles for Responsible Investment in 2006. It is not corporate social responsibility, and it is not the Sustainable Development Goals. Two confusions do most of the damage. An ESG score from a data vendor is not a measurement: MSCI, Sustainalytics, S&P and others use different indicators and weights, so the same issuer can lead one scale and lag another. A training certificate is not evidence that an organisation performs. The certificate shows that a person finished a course. Performance is data, a method, and, where the user of the data requires it, independent assurance.

2. A certificate is not assurance

The note starts from a LinkedIn post by Milene Pardo-Figueroa, about 30 September 2026, which says a commercial ESG certification quoted at USD 3,200 can be replaced by free courses from the United Nations, the World Bank and the OECD. That price is the author’s statement. It was not re-priced. Each title was checked, where a stable page exists, against the provider’s own catalogue on 7 October 2026. Where duration or fee differs, the institutional page is used. A course that is free to follow, with a paid certificate, is labelled as such. The framework tags in the post are a reading order. They are not a crosswalk published by the IFRS Foundation, GRI or the Financial Stability Board.

A free course with a certificate of completion teaches a framework. It does not verify that an organisation has implemented it, measured what it claims, or submitted the result to an independent tester. That second act is assurance, sold against ISO standards, ISAE 3000, ISSA 5000 and national schemes. ISSA 5000, issued in November 2024, applies to sustainability information reported for periods beginning on or after 15 December 2026. The OECD says the same limit of its own Academy: the certificate is a certificate of completion, not a diploma and not an accreditation of competence. Neither document is a charter, a licence to sign an ESG report, or a substitute for reading GRI 3 or IFRS S1.

3. What the certificate records

A certificate of completion records one event: on a given day a registered person passed the provider’s quizzes, often at 70 or 75 percent. It is silent on what that person retains a month later, and on whether the method has been applied to real data. Roediger and Karpicke (2006) had students learn a prose passage under three schedules. Five minutes later, the group that had only read recalled the most, 83 percent of the idea units against 71 percent for the group tested three times. One week later the order reversed: 40 percent after four readings, 56 percent after three readings and one test, 61 percent after one reading and three tests. The readers had gone through the passage 14.2 times on average, the tested group 3.4 times. Asked to predict their recall a week later, the readers gave the highest estimates and the tested group the lowest. A self-paced course with a quiz the same evening resembles the first schedule: the strongest feeling of mastery, and in this experiment the weakest recall after a week. The experiment used short passages and students. Transfer to a professional course is an inference, not a measurement of that course.

Reich and Ruipérez-Valiente (2019) looked at every MIT and Harvard course on edX from 2012 to 2018: 5.63 million learners and 12.67 million registrations. More than half the registrants never opened the courseware. In 2017–18, 3.13 percent of registrants completed. Among those who had paid for the verified certificate, 46 percent did, about fifteen times higher. The study does not say whether paying produces persistence or persistent learners are the ones who pay. The certificate is associated with reaching the last module. That is a real function, and a different one from proving competence. There are also situations in which the document itself is what is asked for: a vacancy, a tender that scores training records, a professional-development log. There, USD 20 or 30 buys the proof. Outside them, the question is what the learner can do the following month.

4. One site, several admissible answers

The worked case is a temporary industrial site, a drilling pad or a yard, over one year. It burns 40,000 litres of diesel in generators and buys 600,000 kWh. The site is hypothetical. The factors are published. UK 2025 conversion factors give 2.66155 kg CO2e per litre for mineral diesel and 2.57082 for the average pump blend: Scope 1 of 106.5 t or 102.8 t. The gap of 3.6 t is one line of the delivery note. Upstream fuel, 0.62409 kg CO2e per litre, is 25.0 t and sits in Scope 3, category 3. It does not appear in a Scope 1 and 2 total.

Scope 2 asks for two figures where contractual instruments exist. Location-based uses the grid that delivers the power. Market-based uses the contract: zero when cancelled guarantees of origin cover the consumption; otherwise the residual mix, which is the national mix once tracked attributes are removed. The same 600,000 kWh, with AIB 2025 factors and Scope 1 held at 106.5 t, is the table. Each figure is admissible if the method is named beside it. Adding a CO2e diesel factor to an AIB figure that is direct CO2 only mixes two bases. A national inventory should supply both.

Country Location-based, t Residual mix, t 100% guarantees of origin, t Scope 1 + 2, t
France8.210.30106.5 to 116.7
Spain63.6143.00106.5 to 249.4
Poland363.4436.20106.5 to 542.6

One meter can be reported as 0, 8.2, 10.3, 63.6, 143.0, 363.4 or 436.2 t. With Scope 1, the site spans 106.5 to 542.6 t, a ratio of 5.1. In Spain the residual-mix figure is 2.25 times the location-based one. Moving the generator load to the grid, at an assumed 35 percent electrical efficiency, lowers the reported figure in every row of the note’s second table: about 98 percent in France on the location-based factor, 86 percent in Spain on that same method, and 5 percent in Poland on the residual mix. The sentence “electrification cut emissions by 86 percent” is exact for one row and for no other. At 40 percent efficiency the last row becomes an increase of 8 percent. In Poland, under the residual mix, the sign depends on a load test. Five things to look for in any report follow: the Scope 2 method, the source and year of each factor, the gases covered, the treatment of upstream fuel, and the assumption on which a claimed reduction turns.

Illustration on published 2025 factors (DESNZ diesel, AIB residual and production mixes). Not an inventory, and not a reference value for any real site. UK fuel factors are used outside the United Kingdom as a proxy. The AIB production mix stands in for a grid average.

5. Where a sentence was measured

KLM, Amsterdam, 20 March 2024: the court found 15 of 19 challenged advertising statements misleading. The point was precision and proportion. Sustainable aviation fuel and reforestation were given what the court called an overly rosy picture of measures that only marginally reduce the harm. The campaign had been withdrawn; no injunction was granted. DWS, Frankfurt, 2 April 2025: the public prosecutor fined the asset manager EUR 25 million. The firm had presented ESG as integral to its identity. The prosecutor found that this picture was not, or not completely, matched by the organisation. The firm accepted the fine. The US SEC had sanctioned the same conduct in September 2023 with USD 19 million. TotalEnergies, Paris, 23 October 2025: the court held that the stated ambition of carbon neutrality by 2050, and the description of the group as a major player in the energy transition, were misleading, because the page did not set out the continued oil and gas investment in the group’s own scenario. Removal was ordered within one month under EUR 10,000 a day, and publication of the judgment for 180 days. Complaints on gas and biofuels were dismissed. The group said it would not appeal. In none of the three files were the published emission figures the thing at issue. Each decision measured the distance between a sentence and the method, the organisation or the plan behind it.

Directive (EU) 2024/825, applicable since 27 September 2026, writes that test into Union consumer law. Unfair in all circumstances: a generic claim such as “green” or “eco-friendly” without recognised excellent performance; a claim about a whole product or business that concerns only one aspect; a claim of neutral, reduced or positive greenhouse-gas impact that rests on offsetting. A claim about future performance is misleading when it is not backed by clear, objective, public and verifiable commitments in an implementation plan. Whoever drafts a product sheet, a tender or a website paragraph in the Union works under these four tests. On the investor side, Berg, Kölbel and Rigobon (2022) compared six agencies. Pairwise correlations of ESG ratings ran from 0.38 to 0.71, average 0.54. Of the disagreement, 56 percent came from measuring the same attribute with different indicators, 38 percent from covering different attributes, and 6 percent from weights. When two ratings differ, ask which of those two it was.

6. A right that needs a reader

Directive (EU) 2026/470 replaces the 2022 test with a double threshold: more than 1,000 employees and more than EUR 450 million of net turnover. One practitioner estimate puts the undertakings still in scope at about 5,000, against about 50,000 before. The legal duty to master the standards has narrowed in that proportion. The same directive gives a new position to those who left the scope. An undertaking with no more than 1,000 employees in the value chain of a reporting company is a protected undertaking. It may refuse any request for sustainability information that goes beyond the voluntary standard. The reporting company must say which items exceed that standard and must tell the supplier of the right to decline. Clauses to the contrary have no effect. The supplier’s own declaration of its size is enough unless it is manifestly wrong.

A questionnaire of two hundred lines can therefore be sorted, once the directive is transposed, into lines inside the voluntary standard and lines outside it. Using the right requires one person who has read that short public text closely enough to do the sort. No certificate enters. Where the supplier declines, the customer may complete the report with estimates. A supplier whose real figures are better than the sector average used for the estimate has an interest in providing them, and can know this only after computing them as in the worked case. In the Union the binding layer also moved in 2026: on 3 July the Commission adopted a delegated act revising the ESRS and another establishing the voluntary standard. EY expects the revised ESRS to enter into force on 10 November 2026 if no objection is raised, with mandatory application from financial year 2027. Read ESRS beside IFRS S2, not instead of the legal text. EFRAG publishes both free of charge.

7. What is free, and six exercises

The catalogue was checked on 7 October 2026 and not read again for revision 2-C. Confirm the certification tab before enrolment. Net Zero 101, on UN CC:Learn, is the cleanest match to the post: about 1.5 hours, free certificate if each module quiz is at least 75 percent. It teaches climate science and citizen-level action. It does not teach IFRS S2, a Science Based Targets submission, or GRI 302 and 305. Introduction to Sustainable Finance is the substantive finance course on the same platform; the course page still describes a free certificate, while the catalogue line checked the same week prices it at USD 20 and states a 10-hour load, not the 3 hours of the post. The OECD e-learning Academy on Responsible Business Conduct is unambiguous: registration, modules and the completion certificate are free, and the certificate does not evaluate competence. Plastic waste, gender and human rights, and national adaptation plans are real courses whose digital certificates were priced at USD 20. Green Fiscal Policy is the ambiguous case: the course page does not show a price, the catalogue flags USD 20. The World Bank climate and disaster risk screening is a free tool after registration, closer to physical-risk work than most short primers, and a completion certificate is not on the published card. InforMEA issues a free certificate on completion. GHG Protocol Scope 2 certificate was USD 30; the Scope 3 course was USD 600. Coursera, edX and FutureLearn often leave the audit free and the shareable certificate paid. They are not listed here as free certifications. Primary texts remain free: IFRS S1 and S2, the GRI standards, the OECD due-diligence guidance, the UN Guiding Principles, the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard, and the ESRS. A course is a map. The standard is the territory.

  1. Scope 1 and 2 of one real site, both Scope 2 methods, from public factors. Half a day. One page: activity data, each factor with source and year, two Scope 2 figures, gases covered.
  2. Read the climate pages of a published report against IFRS S2 or the ESRS climate standard. Two hours. A list of what the standard requires and the report does not show.
  3. Test three environmental claims against Directive (EU) 2024/825. One hour. Each claim classed as generic, whole-for-part, offset-based, future without a plan, or supported.
  4. Walk the six steps of the OECD due-diligence guidance on one supplier. Half a day. For each step: what is known, from which document, and what is not.
  5. Screen one project in the World Bank climate and disaster risk tools. Two hours. The output sheet, with the hazards and the assumptions entered.
  6. Sort a customer questionnaire against the EU voluntary sustainability standard. Two hours. Each line marked inside or outside.

A workable order for an energy or industrial professional: Net Zero 101, then the OECD Academy and exercise 4, then the free GHG Protocol Corporate Standard webinar and exercise 1 in the same week, then IFRS S1 and S2 beside the ESRS climate standard and exercise 2, then the World Bank tools on one project, then exercises 3 and 6 on the next external text and the next questionnaire. Close with Green Fiscal Policy or the taxonomy course only if the work touches subsidies, carbon pricing or EU-aligned investment. The sequence does not produce a marketable title. It produces six worksheets and a person who can see what is missing. After a module, close it and write the definitions and one worked number from memory, then compare. Repeat a few days later. Spacing the recalls over days extends the 2006 result. It is not part of that experiment.

8. Limits

Catalogues change without notice. A free certificate this month can be a USD 20 download next month. One title in the source post could not be tied to a live free-certificate page on 7 October 2026 and is left unmarked. The site in the worked case does not exist. The judgments in section 5 of this page were not read for the note; the summaries follow law-firm and press accounts cited in the PDF. The figure of 5,000 undertakings is one practitioner’s estimate. Publication of the two delegated acts of 3 July 2026 in the Official Journal was not confirmed on the date of the note, and the value-chain cap takes effect through national transposition. The learning studies concern students and university courses, not an ESG course. Nothing here is an offer of training, a ranking of providers, legal advice, or advice to drop a qualification that a named employer has written into a vacancy.

The chain, point by point

The last link walks the same selection in short lines. ESG is not a rating and not a certificate. A certificate records one quiz day. Assurance answers a different question, and ISSA 5000 covers periods from 15 December 2026. Rereading feels strongest and fades: three recalls kept 61 percent a week later, four readings 40. On the large platforms, 3.13 percent finished, and 46 percent of those who paid for the certificate. Then the yard: 40,000 litres and 600,000 kWh, Scope 1 of 106.5 or 102.8 tonnes, the same electricity at 8.2 or 436 tonnes, and a named span of 106.5 to 542.6. “Down 86 percent” is one row. In Poland the sign can flip. KLM, DWS and TotalEnergies measured the sentence, not the tonne. Four tests follow: generic, partial, offset, future without a plan. Six agencies agree at 0.54. A protected supplier may decline the extra lines, and no certificate sorts them. Net Zero 101 is free. Many downloads cost 20 dollars. Six worksheets stand where a 3,200 dollar title was quoted.
